Genetic Counseling and Screening
AdventHealth Memorial Medical Center Genetic Counseling and High Risk Screening Clinic staffed by nurse practitioner Cindy Trawick ARNP-BC, the clinic goal is to assess our patients’ individual and family history of cancer so they can make the most informed decision about genetic testing. A genetic counseling risk assessment includes:
- Gathering a comprehensive, cancer-focused individual and family history
- Assessing an individual’s risk of developing cancer based on information retrieved
- Determining whether the family history is indicative of a hereditary cancer syndrome risk
- Providing education about the options of genetic testing and its risk and benefits
- Offering emotional, psychological, and social support in regards to testing
- Reviewing medical management choices with or without genetic testing
- Collaborating with the patients’ referring physician regarding the risk assessment information for future cancer risk management
Genetic Testing For High Risk Individuals
AdventHealth Memorial Medical Center provides individualized appointment for patients with an increased risk for hereditary cancer conditions. The following are some of the indications for referrals to the high risk assessment clinic:
- Breast Cancer diagnosis before age 50 (personal history or family history)
- Triple negative breast cancer
- Ovarian Cancer
- Male Breast Cancer
- Two primary Breast Cancers
- Ashkenazi Jewish Ancestry
- 3 or more Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome (HBOC) at any age in family history
- Previously identified HBOC mutation in the family
- Multiple primary cancers in the same individual (ex. Diagnosed with colon and uterine, bilateral breast cancer, etc.)
- Multiple family members on the same side of the family diagnosed with the same type of cancer
